This is an internal audit workflow app that lets auditors upload attachments, map them to applicable rules, and draft reports faster. It is not a pre-market regulated product like medical or aviation software, but it does handle professional documents that may include personal data, confidential business records, and possibly sensitive compliance material.
At the MVP stage, the main regulatory burden is privacy and basic software compliance: privacy policy, terms, cookie notice if tracking is used, data processing terms, and secure handling of uploaded files. If the app uses AI to summarize or draft report sections, you also need disclosure, human review controls, and clear limits on accuracy because the output can affect professional decisions.
For public launch, the risk rises because enterprise buyers will ask about access control, audit trails, retention, encryption, subcontractors, incident response, and whether data is stored or processed outside their country. In the US, the core issues are FTC unfair/deceptive practices, contract terms, and state privacy laws like CCPA/CPRA where applicable. In the EU, GDPR becomes the main framework, especially for lawful basis, processor obligations, cross-border transfers, and data minimization.
At scaling and global expansion, the burden increases through procurement questionnaires, DPAs, security reviews, ISO 27001/SOC 2 expectations, and local data transfer issues. If you sell to firms that handle regulated industries, you may also inherit sector-specific obligations through customer contracts even if your own product is not directly regulated.
The smartest first move is to keep the MVP narrow: one report type, one geography, one customer segment, minimal personal data, and no autonomous legal conclusions. Build it as a controlled drafting assistant with human approval, not as a system that claims to determine the correct law by itself.
Regulator
US FTC and state consumer protection laws; EU GDPR; US and EU app store policies; general enterprise data protection and contract law
Classification
Lightly regulated B2B software with material privacy and enterprise procurement obligations
Pathway
Privacy-first B2B SaaS pathway: define data flows, minimize personal data, publish privacy policy and terms, implement access control and audit logging, complete GDPR/CCPA notices and DPA templates, then run a security review before pilot and public launch
